The WaveDrum from Korg is quite an interesting giz for hand percussionists, but it's pricey. It only does drums, but it allows you to select/design your own drum sound, and because it uses a drumhead with mics for its source waveforms, it accurately captures the nuances of various drumming techniques, including brushing, etc. It has not sold well, probably partly because of the price, and partly because of the culture and mindset of most drummers, who seem to prefer a diverse kit that they can whack with a stick to the sonic possibilities that the WaveDrum offers. People wanting to create native drum tracks or other spicey hand drumming solos or sections will love the extraordinary range of drum 'tuning' that the WaveDrum allows. Because it requires acoustic input, the WaveDrum does not allow midi playback, a drawback during recording and editing. There is a good review of the WaveDrum in the March '95 issue of Keyboard. |
